In his Half-Priced Stocks he explains, "Despite unprecedented fuel costs, the company continues to power forward." Here's his bullish review.

"Last quarter, Carnival shelled out $530 per metric ton for fuel, up sharply from $330 per ton a year ago. And after pumping about 800,000 metric tons, the company rang up a total fuel bill of $425 million.

"For the year, management is expecting fuel costs to come in about $750 million higher than in 2007, which will trim earnings by about $0.92 per share. Fortunately, the company is in a position to absorb those higher costs.

"Over the past three months, two million passengers have boarded a Carnival ship, for an occupancy rate of 104.8% (indicating some berths held more than two guests). And those visitors paid $2.6 billion for their tickets and plunked down another $743 million in the lounges, casinos and gift shops after they arrived on board.

"Combined, those $3.4 billion in quarterly revenues are nearly $480 million (+16.5%) ahead of last year's total. That works out to about $230 in sales from every one of the firm's 14.5 million available berths.

"This key metric, gross revenue yield, continues to rise at a steady clip -- suggesting that management is doing a commendable job of squeezing more and more revenues from its ships.

"Meanwhile, by diligently cutting all non-fuel expenses, net income actually came in at $390 million, or $0.49, a penny ahead of last year. In other words, Carnival has taken just about the worst that can be thrown at it. And not only did it stay afloat, but actually showed a year-over-year gain.

"If the company can tread water during this period of unprecedented fuel costs, then imagine what it can do when operating conditions become a little sunnier. On that front, there are plenty of encouraging signs.

"First, occupancy levels remain above 100% and advance bookings for the next 12 months are tracking as strong as ever -- and at substantially higher ticket prices.

"Furthermore, given the dollar's freefall relative to the euro, Americans looking to visit Europe are increasingly finding cruises to be the most cost-effective way. In fact, Carnival is launching two new ships this month that will be exclusively plying European routes.

"Longer term, cruising continues to gain in popularity, particularly with a weak economy encouraging many travelers to seek out trips that provide more bang for the buck.

"With all-in-one packaging, all-you-can-eat dining and every amenity imaginable for both kids and adults, cruising is actually less expensive than most traditional vacations. The percentage of families coming onboard has doubled over the past six years, and repeat business tends to be high.

"As the dominant leader, no one will benefit from this trend like Carnival. In the meantime, the company is coping with higher fuel costs by tacking on surcharges and tweaking itineraries to replace distant ports of call like Aruba with more accessible destinations.

"Once leisure stocks return to favor, I'm confident that CCL will bounce back strongly. For now, those who take advantage of this pullback can lock in a hefty yield of 4.9%."

Revenues rose more than 16% to $3.4 billion. Net earnings were 49 cents a share. That wasn't too impressive, considering that it was a penny better than the previous year's quarter. However, according to Briefing.com, Carnival killed the earnings expectations of analysts by 8 cents. Net sales were also higher than what Wall Street's expectations.

This performance sent the stock up more than 5%. I think investors need to be a little careful here because Carnival's management has become cautious about the next quarter because of energy costs. The company expects earning of $1.56 to $1.58 per share in Q3. Last year's Q3 saw bottom-line income of $1.67 per share. So, growth will not be found in next quarter's report.

Yet, again, the market didn't seem to mind, as it was high off the expectations-beating data. Is Carnival, therefore, a buy? Well, I don't think it's overly expensive considering the P/E ratio and the yield attached to the stock. But the direction of oil prices has me concerned. Not only will that increase costs for Carnival, but it will compete with the discretionary dollars of potential vacationers. I see the valuation case, but the current state of the market makes me reluctant to pull the trigger on this stock. Some would argue that all this is baked into the shares since they did so well yesterday, but I'm not convinced.

The June crude oil contract is also near record levels again today, and is currently at $118, which is not helping CCL. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on CCL.

After hitting a one-year high of $52.10 in October, the stock hit a one-year low of $36.10 in March. This morning, CCL opened at $39.29. So far today the stock has hit a low of $38.95 and a high of $39.81. As of 12:55, CCL is trading at $39.12, down $1.19 (-3.0%). The chart for CCL looks deteriorating slightly, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a June bear-call credit spread above the $45 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 8.7% return in two months as long as CCL is below $45 at June expiration. Carnival would have to rise by more than 15% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

CCL hasn't been above $45 since December and has shown resistance around $42.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out in mid-June) are a positive surprise, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the high cost of fuel, which should weigh down this stock.

Despite this massive rebate, CCL shares are rising today, showing that what really matters for companies like this are lower oil prices, which mean lower fuel costs. Front-month crude today has reached as low as $99.55 and are currently just above $100. If you think that the company won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on CCL.

After hitting a one-year high of $52.10 in October, the stock hit a one-year low of $36.10 last month. CCL opened this morning at $41.06. So far today the stock has hit a low of $41.06 and a high of $43.00. As of 11:50, CCL is trading at $42.70, up $2.22 (5.5%). The chart for CCL looks bullish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a May bull-put credit spread below the $35 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 5.3% return in just 7 weeks as long as CCL is above $35 at May expiration. Carnival would have to fall by more than 17% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

CCL hasn't been below $36 at all in the past year and has shown support around $37 recently. This trade could be risky if crude oil prices (and fuel costs) continue to rise, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the support the stock might find around $36, where it bottomed out twice in the past few months.

Larger booking increases are expected in Europe, as opposed to North America, which may begin to show the effects of the U.S. economic slowdown. As of first quarter 2008, Carnival had 85 ships with a passenger capacity of 158,000.

Meanwhile, cruise prices should rise modestly, and a likely fuel surcharge will ease the impact of higher fuel costs. Further, analysts also like CCL's rising demand for Caribbean cruises, along with the company's leading market share in leisure cruises. The Reuters FY 2008/FY 2009 EPS consensus estimates for CCL are $3.09 to $3.40.
The risks? Analysts are keeping an eye on Carnival's advanced bookings for signs of further effects from the U.S. economic slowdown. A sustained drop would lead to cruise price discounting -- typically a sign of softer revenue results ahead.

The First Call mean rating for CCL is: Buy [19 firms]. Mean 2008 target: $52 [high: $60, low: $46].

Stock Analysis: Carnival Corp. is a moderate-risk stock not suitable for low-risk investors. Investors with an investment horizon longer than 2 years should be rewarded from CCL's shares. Sell/Stop Loss if you were to purchase shares in this company: $27.

Disclosure: Lazzaro has no positions in stocks. The storm, currently moving as a Class Three hurricane through the Yucatan peninsula, has affected Carnival Corp. (NYSE: CCL) the most.

According to the company's site, as of Sunday, August 18th, the itineraries of over ten Carnival ships have been altered, forcing them to dock in Eastern ports-of-call or cancel a part of their stay. CruiseCritic.com has reported that a dozen of Carnival's ships were impacted from Dean. The company could not be reached for comment. Only three Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE: RCL) ships needed to steer clear of the storm.

Despite many weather stations calling Jamaica "Ground Zero" all weekend, the island nation received a glancing blow on Sunday. Gene Sloan of USAToday's "The Cruise Log" reported today that Royal Caribbean will be the first to test Jamaica's waters on Wednesday, as originally scheduled. Carnival's spokesman Vance Gulliksen told Sloan their line expects to resume calls in Jamaica next week and plans to return to the Caymans as early as later this week, but is "awaiting final confirmation."

The major question is the impact of Dean on Cozumel and other Mexican ports on the Yucatan Coast. (NYSE: CCL) opened at $46.04. So far today the stock has hit a low of $45.07 and a high of $46.80. As of 12:30 this afternoon, CCL is trading at 45.89, up 0.28 (0.6%).

After hitting a one year high of 52.73 in January, the stock slumped throughout February before finding support earlier this month around 45. CCL shares are rising after narrowly beating earnings expectations with their release this morning. The technical indicators for CCL have been bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a troublesome 2 STARS (out of 5) sell rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider an April bull-put credit spread below the $42.50 range. CCL hasn't been below 42.50 since September and has shown support around 44.90. This trade could be risky if fuel prices rise over the next month, but even if CCL falls a little bit, the stock looks like it has recently found some support above its 200 day moving average.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. UTX is a multi-industry holding company that undertakes operations in six impressive business segments: Otis, Carrier, Pratt & Whitney, Sikorksy, Hamilton Sunstrand, UTC Fire & Security.

-Otis is the world's largest maker of elevators and escalators. Otis account for about 22% of UTX's revenue and has a solid international presence, with 80% of the divisions' revenue stemming from international sales.

-Carrier, 29% of UTX's revenue, is the world's largest maker of commercial and residential heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems, and also offers refrigeration and food service equipment.

-Pratt & Whitney, 22% of UTX's revenue, is one of the three-largest jet engine makers in the world, supplying engines to both Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Airbus, and to the U.S. Department of Defense [fighter jets and transport aircraft.]

-Hamilton Sunstrand, 10% of UTX's revenue, is a leading aerospace and industrial products manufacturer.-UTC Fire & Security 10% of UTX's sales, provides safety products and services, with more than 80% of its revenue stemming from international sources.

-Finally, Sikorsky, 7% of UTX's revenue, is one of the leading military and commercial helicopter manufacturers in the world.

Hence, while UTX's breadth is not as wide as GE's, the company nevertheless offers an impressive "operational pantry" of civilian and military, domestic and foreign, large company and mid-size company clients. Further, to be sure, UTX's stock is levered to the U.S. economic cycle -- it has experienced two $40-level to $25-level price drops in the past 10 years --- but its customer breadth and solid defense work generally translate into shallower drops and quicker bounce-backs than a typical large cap company.

And as the understated analysts often say on Wall Street, smaller drops and quicker bounce-backs are not bad things.

Investment Category: United Technologies is a moderate-risk stock not suitable for low-risk investors. A reduction in U.S. defense spending growth could depress UTX's revenue, but otherwise its companion operations make the stock an appropriate purchase for patient investors.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
